I started watching 'When love comes to town' - for those that don't know it's a reality tv show based on a bus full of city women who visit country towns looking for love. Normally not the type of show I go for, as I am a bit of a hopeless romantic and don't believe that you should have to 'fight' or 'compete' for love. But as I was watching it (aside from a few catty comments) it had some sweet moments.
What I specifically liked about the show was that each guy who took a group of girls out, had a something lovely to say about each of them. And called each woman "beautiful". Which I thought was gorgeous. Now I know this is just a show…but watching it and listening to the women talk about themselves made me realise how often we look for outside affirmations about ourselves. We often let our little gremlin in our own heads almost talk us out of the compliments once they're even given! I think, the second we start to appreciate ourselves and LOVE ourselves we can truly begin to see the beauty in everyone else.
I found a cute quote, not sure who it's by:
"Don't find love, let love find you. That's why it's called falling in love, because you don't force yourself to fall. You just fall."We quite often get focussed on what other people think, or say to reinforce what we think of ourselves we forget to stop and appreciate our own qualities. One of the reasons I started this blog was to compliment a stranger, but what about ourselves?! I think we should compliment ourselves everyday and realise our own positive qualities! Which I think is a lot harder than complimenting someone else. But like anything, we improve with practice.
So, to practice, I sat down to write down compliments for myself and stared at an empty page for about 5 minutes…not because I couldn't think of anything, but because I seemed to justify everything I thought of. Which made me realise - we are our own worst critic. We shouldn't be that hard on ourselves…I mean crazy as the thought is, we have to live with ourselves everyday, forever don't we?! If we were to choose to live with someone forever…would we choose someone that constantly put you down?! Definitely not! So we should all start with ourselves and give ourselves at least one positive compliment everyday!! :)
